Are Ratings Reliable When Searching Restaurants? (2nd Feb 26 at 6:29pm UTC)
Whenever I search for restaurants near me, ratings are usually the first thing I look at—but lately, I’m questioning how reliable they really are. A place with 4.5 stars should be great, right? Yet I’ve had plenty of meals where the rating didn’t match the experience at all.

One issue is that ratings don’t show consistency. A restaurant might earn high scores from a few great visits months ago, but quality can change over time. New staff, menu updates, or cost-cutting can affect food and service, while the star rating stays frozen. When searching restaurants near me, I care more about how the place performs now, not last year.

Another problem is biased reviews. Some people leave one-star ratings for reasons unrelated to food, like delivery delays or parking issues. Others give five stars after a single visit during a special promotion. This makes it hard to judge the real quality of restaurants near me.

I’ve also noticed that popular chains often have more balanced ratings simply because they have volume, while smaller local spots might suffer from a few negative reviews that don’t reflect their overall quality. Photos and recent comments usually tell a better story than stars alone.

Personally, I’ve started reading the most recent reviews and looking for patterns instead of focusing on the average score. What about you? When searching restaurants near me, do you trust ratings, or do you have other ways to decide where to eat?
